Astara Childen's Classes

The school holds shows at least twice a year. One Summer show and one Christmas show, thereby giving all students the opportunity to show friends and family the skills they have been learning and it's also nice for the parents to watch their children shine and be entertained! There is always opportunity to show off; performing within the community is very much encouraged and students regularly take part in local events. 

Startots Musical Movement: A class especially devised for the under 5's! It incorporates Ballet basic movements, for strength and discipline and an overall awareness of the body. Followed by a very fun and energetic section of short exercises to uptempo music. We sometimes use shakers to work on the chidlren's musicality.

Starlets/Starlights Musical Theatre The next step up is a mix of of dance, drama and singing.

Starlets - 6-8yrs / Starlights - 9-13yrs

Dance - A physical warm up is an important element always included in the class, which will prepare the children mentally and physically for the class ahead whilst, of course, warming up those muscles! We aim to offer a style of dance that is a combination of street, jazz and modern dance accompanied to music... anything from musicals to present chart hits that the children will know well.

Drama - The drama section heavily focusses on group and duo improvisation. This is great, not only for working on creativity and improving all general acting techniques such as voice projection, body language and facial expressions.. but the group improvisation brings the children together, learning to support and listen to each other whilst still having loads of fun! Drama games and script work are also important ways of improving acting technique, which are included in the lessons.

Singing - A vocal warm up will start this section of the class, which will include scales, lip trills, sirening and tongue twisters (which almost always gets the children in fits of laughter!). Although the class is "Musical Theatre", song choices are not just limited to songs from musicals. Pop songs, old and new, are also covered, for a bit of variety.  Children will be taught how to practice good technique as well as developing group and individual solo skills, which is great for building confidence.

Hip Hop:  Teaching you everything you need to know to impress your friends with your newly acquired knowledge of the latest dance moves as well as old school grooves!  In hip hop the children will warm-up and work on basic technique learning moves such as: The snake, the wave, and basic body bopping and locking, travelling sequences, followed by a funky dance routine which will be added to each week!

Boys Dance:  A class especially for the boys.  A chance to let off steam and work on high energy combination sequences and moves.  We do also cover breakdancing too - which boys happen to be naturally very good at!

Dress code for classes:  Children must wear comfortable clothes they are able to move about in.  Please no Jeans, or short skirts.  Jazz shoes/boots or trainers are acceptable for musical theatre (ballet shoes or bare feet for Startots 3-5yrs).  Hip Hop - children can wear whatever they like, the more funky the better!  Please always bring a drink to class.
